Buteyko method overview

Professor Konstantin Pavlovitch Buteyko, MD, (1923 Ukraine – 2003 Russia) graduated, in 1952 with honours, the 1st Moscow Medical Institute. The same year, at the age of 29, he was diagnosed with malignant high blood pressure and given a prognosis of no more than two years to live.

He combined his academic knowledge with his analytical understanding of the human body and perceptions about his own health and by changing his breathing he normalized his blood pressure, ridding himself from the accompanying symptoms.

Professor Buteyko proceeded to specialize in the human respiratory system and further developed his breathing retraining exercises into The Buteyko breathing method. He dedicated his life to researching the human breathing and successfully treating some 150 diseases.

The method was recognized by the Russian health authorities in 1982 and introduced out of Russia in the early 90s. It got known in England following a BBC TV program - QED, August 1998 ».

Professor Buteyko reached the age of 80.

Buteyko method in a nutshell

Exercises for a gradual reduction of breathing depth and intensity, to be repeated several times a day.

Gases exchanges

We breathe to preserve the delicate physiological conditions in our body. While breathing in excess of the level of activity the gases levels deviate from the norms and the body activates compensation and defense mechanisms (=diseases) according to the genetic predisposing. Without these adjustments the organism would have ceased operating (=death).

From Sickness to health

Professor Buteyko found that with breathing normalization the  defense mechanisms and their accompanying symptoms subside, than stop from developing and a stable remission can be achieved.

Pharmacological treatment suppresses the defense mechanisms but overlooks the wrong breathing, hence does not eradicate the cause of the chronic disease.

The Buteyko Method is unique in improving ones' health.

What happens when one practices the Buteyko method?

At first symptoms subside, then they do not develop. After a stable correct breathing pattern is achieved – there is a constant remission. The person is free of symptoms.

During this process the body goes through adjustments and detoxifying recovery reactions. Their range and intensity are very wide and depend on the preliminary level of health-disturbances. The most prevalent are flue-like symptoms.

Improvements in the quality of the sleep, the metabolism and the level of energy will take place.

What is needed?
